Free-to-play multi-dimensional horror game

IMMURE is a free adventure game from Wither Studios. This indie survival horror lets you guide Will, a seemingly ordinary guy trapped in a huge multi-dimensional mansion that has no exit. Each doorway leads into a new realm, filled with trapped souls that need saving. Guided by a mysterious crystal, you find clues and solve puzzles while escaping monsters.

IMMURE is a 2.5D sidescrolling game that combines hand-drawn artwork with full 3D models to create a unique art style that makes for some impressive animation effects. It feels like a flatter Nun Massacre game, but with a larger world.

Short yet mindblowing

The art style used in IMMURE is reminiscent of story-driven flash games from the early 2010s. In terms of graphics, it can be compared to Salt and Sanctuary. Its rather simplistic graphics characteristic of low-budget games can be off-putting for players who find graphics integral to the experience. However, if you can do away with the art style and prefer something with good world-building and story, then this is redeemable.

In this game, you use a keyboard and mouse to control Will and the trapezohedron, respectively. The latter is a glowing gem that serves as your guide and weapon as you navigate through the different realms and fight against monsters. This is where it gets interesting, there are no conventional combat scenarios. You essentially find the right opportunity to eliminate monsters and get treated to an impressive cutscene artwork

It feels simple at first, but the world-building is enough to captivate players, not to mention the diverse cast of characters it offers. Riddles, 2D running, and inventory management are all part of the experience. Also, it’s worth noting that while the first part is free, the second part is not—here is where other endings are. It’s like Poppy Playtime and Poppy Playtime - Chapter 2 in this aspect.

Visually simple with an impressive story

What IMMURE lacks in visual quality, it makes up for in its massive in-game lore. The variety of realms in this game is matched by its characters and enemies, and the individual stories you get to hear. The first part is free, which gives players the opportunity to test the waters and see if the second part is worth acquiring. For story-driven horror, the free entry is worth a try.
